Fun video. It's amazing that a horse with such a bizarre running style managed to win 25 of 31 races. Braulio Baeza said that in order to win he had to time Buckpasser's move so that he just clipped his opponents at the wire. The reasons for that are obvious from this video. Thanks for showing it.

Buckpasser was a real great racehorse, and his daughters are like gold.

A wonderful racehorse, great broodmare sire and an even better temperment!

Comment: Buckpasser was a very impressive racehorse. His only quirk was he would pull up when he got the lead. You had to wait until the stretch before you produced him. That is not uncommon in racehorses, they seem to think that when they take the lead, then their job is done. Street Sense shows that tendency to some degree. Good trainers and jocks can overcome this.

REPLY by cf1970: Yes, very good points. Sunday Silence also seemed to have this same tendency when he loafed and swerved when he had race(s) in hand. A very interesting trait, to be sure!
Comment: Oh wow!? What an impressive performance!

REPLY by cf1970: Agreed. Stamina, speed...Buckpasser and Secretariat are regarded to have the most perfect conformation in American racing history. What a beaut. He sure had a lot left in the tank going to the wire!
Comment: He sure was underated my good man. His jockey said he was the best he ever rode not The Dr. and he finished a length ahead of him in their only race in which Damascus won.
by: rscarbro100
Comment: He is an under-rated animal. If you talk to the old-timers, they usually name Buckpasser as one of the best.

Comment: great video just awesome!!!! truly top 10-20 horse all time... like someone said they dont make them like him anymore!
by: bigfred3217
Comment: Wow, he won 13 of his 14 races! Wonder why he`s not so famous....that`s a shame.

Comment: The best thing about this video is the wonderful background music! Perfect..

Comment:: It's a crying shame they don't run the JCGC at 2 miles any more. And before you say, "because they don't breed for that distance," run it at that distance and trainers will find horses to run at that distance.
by: WhiteCamry
Comment: Only once he drew off to victory, I think it was 7 lengths. I am not sure, so don't hold me to that :). I love the fact his daughters produced so many champions. What a horse.

Video 4 : Buckpasser winning the 1965 Sapling Stakes as a juvenile.
"Scary racehorse, maybe the best ever?"
Title: After being left at the start, Buckpasser shows his legendary talent and outruns the leaders in a fantastic juvenile effort.

Comment: Many thanks for posting this Sapling. Buck was one of my favorite? runners of all time. As a kid, I use to visit him at the Phipps barn on the Oklahoma side of the track. He was a real gentleman and he had a beautiful, fluid, ground-eating style and he seemed to believe that he was there to entertain everyone - or give them a heart attack! Now if someone can upload the '67 Surburban H. where Buck was down by 4 at the 1/16 pole.
REPLY by cf1970: You're very welcome. I haven't found the '67 Suburban yet, but I'd certainly love to see it. Thanks for viewing and sharing.
Comment: That is what a classic type colt will do to good colts. Usually the majority of runners in 2Yr. old contests like the Sapling prove to be sprinters. Having to make up that ground had no effect on Buckpasser.
Comment: I was at the 1967 Suburban Handicap and would love to see video of that race. It has remained burned in my memory as the greatest horse race I've ever seen. Buckpasser was amazing. He was NOT going to lose. In most of his races, I think he like to toy with the opposition by coming from behind and? proving how totally superior he was to mortal horses. He's one of the greatest, and underrated today.
Comment: I was at the 1967 Suburban, and it was unquestionably the greatest race I've ever seen. I'd love to see video of it. Buckpasser toyed with the other horses in most of his races. Truly one of the greats, and definitely underrated today.
